 Elliott Grabill is a romantic composer whose primary goal is to create a body of work that encompasses a complete emotional landscape. Much of his music gravitates toward two poles: the dark satire of humanity and the sincere transcendence of nature. He identifies strongly with artists like Charles Ives, William Carlos Williams, and Goethe, whose lives encompassed more than just their oeuvres. Their primary vocations outside of art gave them a degree of artistic freedom from trends and institutional approval. Grabill typically writes concert-length works that draw listeners into a full narrative. Like much late Romantic and early twentieth-century music, his music is dense and ornate, often moving through multiple emotional states rather than maintaining a single mood or organizing itself around a single conceptual premise. Grabill’s music also incorporates electronics, expanding his vocabulary of timbre and gesture.

Grabill holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory and the University of Virginia. His recent work includes Iwwerrescht, his first major orchestral composition, which the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra will premiere in 2027, and his debut album Heroes and Villains, recorded by the Civitasolis Reed Quintet and featuring his two concert-length reed quintets, Heroes and Villains and Travilah. His work has been performed by the Civitasolis Reed Quintet, Pique Collective, the Washington Men's Camerata, and Dark in the Song, as well as at venues including the Kennedy Center. He has received grants from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Bard Early College Research Fund.

Grabill founded the Hargrove in 2022, an intimate listening room in Baltimore that provides a stage for independent performers of jazz, experimental music, and contemporary classical music while making serious music accessible to the community. He also actively performs on the tenor saxophone and has been teaching high school math for many years.
